Introduction - How are you going to get the attention of the reader and let them know what you are talking about? |
Main Ideas - Each paragraph should be about one thing. That one thing is the Main Idea. The Main Idea is usually expressed in the first sentence in a paragraph. That first sentence is called a Topic Sentence. |
Details - Each paragraph should be about the Main Idea. You have a Topic Sentence, and then you should have two or three Supporting Sentences that expand on the Main Idea. Try to avoid items that distract from the Main Idea. |
Eliminate Distractions - It is important to stay on topic when you are writing. It is equally important to eliminate anything that doesn't belong in your paragraphs.
Concluding Paragraph - At the end of an essay, you need to sum up what you talked about in such a way as to bring everything back together.
Style
Varying Sentence Structure - Do you use a variety of types of sentences? If you use only one kind of sentence, it makes for a more boring read.
Mood - Is the mood appropriate for the topic being discussed? Do your word choices convey the mood you are trying to set?
Audience - Are you aware of who the intended audience of your paper is? Are you writing for a professor? Are you writing for Grandma? Are you writing for a fellow student?
Point of View - Do you remain the same person throughout your paper?
Voice - Does the writing "sound" like you to the reader? Are you addressing things in the right way?
